A group of community leaders work to restore the Historic Pickensville Rosenwald School in rural Southwest Alabama. One of the thousands of schools built for the education of African Americans by Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute and Julius Rosenwald, philanthropist and president of Sears Roebuck, the school also served as a community gathering space until it closed in the mid-1960s. Years of neglect and major weather events, caused the school to fall into disrepair. When a group of former students moved back to the area, they worked to restore the school hoping for it to again become an intergenerational community space. In 2019, the state of Alabama endorsed the grand opening of the Historic Pickensville Rosenwald School museum as part of a bicentennial celebration.
