Portals is a first-of-its-kind virtual classroom where students, faculty, and subject specialists can jointly share a learning experience in a fully immersive environment. As part of this ongoing live event series, students have explored the interior of an Arizona cave system (complete with striking examples of early archaic cave art) and explored the now-destroyed Syrian ruins at Palmyra with a Middle-Eastern studies specialist. The OVAL platform, upon which the Portals series is hosted, supports distributed participation and an instructor/student hierarchy as well as live voice chat and video/still image export.
