This trailer is a call to create art & science to contribute to mitigating climate change.

(1) It's a call to filmmakers, designers, and all those who care, to imagine inherently democratic solutions for deep decarbonization and good lives for all, based on open data & open science.

(2) And a call to scientists, lawyers, and all others, to create the scientific foundations for inherently democratic and legally binding solutions for deep decarbonization and good lives for all, based on open data & open science. Under the rule of law, we can oblige States to take positive action to mitigate climate change, if and in as far as it is a truly existential global governance challenge.

How to solve the climate crisis? How to turn a threat multiplier into an opportunity multiplier? In 2018, social movements around the globe started doing so. Effective solutions will not (only) be second-best solutions (like emissions trading), because these may work for other global governance problems, but they will fail for climate change. As Bill McKibben famously said: "Winning slowly is the same as losing." First-best solutions (e.g. regulations and taxation) are necessary to stop global warming.

How? This is the challenge. But the alternative, if it's already too late, is not to do nothing. The alternative is to change our relevant legal, political & economic systems to make first-best solutions possible.

As just two examples, this short film shows two vitally important legal norms: In the German constitution, Art. 1(1) of the Basic Law; and in the UN System, Art. 39 UN Charter. We can interpret these norms as if they included the term "[in the climate system]" — and immediately, we find States legally bound to mitigate climate change in order to protect human rights and international peace and security.

Art. 1 (1) GG: "Human dignity [in the climate system] shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority."
