What to do as an individual in the midst of climate crisis? I always feel powerless and overwhelmed in the face of environmental crisis and feel mild “ecogrief.” Thanks to this school assignment my beliefs were hugely shaken up because I was an avid zero waste practitioner and I tried very much to live sustainably and consciously at least when it came to visible waste and especially plastic trash. I was angry at the world at the beginning and I tried to persuade my family to also live zero waste lifestyle. However these habits are limiting and difficult to maintain if you don’t have the right resources, money and time.
The project PPF was done for the Israeli start-up Spark beyond. This business sells data for banks, insurance companies and other commercial subjects. It uses a database which thanks to AI can connect information from the Internet, stock markets, science papers and so on. The company has decided to “save the world” and solve the climate crisis. Our task was to think of a digital solution using AI to help them with this resolution. I was thinking how to explain to ordinary people the consequences of eco-crisis – not dying polar bears, nor plastic polluted oceans have any influence over my daily life. PPF mobile app prototype is aimed to show people how could look like their life if they won’t change their stance and actions toward environmental crisis.
I was doing this project as an exchange student at Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem so I did research about climate future of Israel. For example there is a huge possibility that the coastline of Israel will be flooded in ten or twenty years because of melting icebergs. Or there will be more inland floods or in other places there is a risk of spreading desserts.
After filling out the questionnaire (about their age, address, job, socio-economical status,…), the user can find out through app how can eco-crisis affect them on the personal level. I connected scientific predictions, personal data and AI (predicting and learning abilities). My fictional user Omer for example lives in Tel Aviv, eats regularly red meat, drive a car. Omer is in risk of losing his house because is in the coastline of Israel due to rising sea levels, meat will be more and more expensive and inaccessible, driving personal car based on fossil burning will also be the future senseless. The AI is a tool which can gather and analyse data which then can be used to predict future. App also through notifications advise people what to do to minimalise consequences of climate crisis – demonstrate, protest, demand political “green” decisions, using public transport, eat less meat,…
