PARTICLE High-Density Sensor Network Platform (HiSensorNet) brings the capability to monitor at a large scale multiple environmental parameters including air temperature, humidity, gases and ground motion.
The PARTICLE team developed (1) sensors (HW+FW in a modular architecture that incorporates MEMS accelerometers for ground motion measurement) and (2) server platforms (a highly scalable Big-Data platform that networks and collects data from sensors, also allowing the incorporation of AI and analytics).
PARTICLE platform is being used in the SSN-Alentejo project, coordinated by the Évora University, which is deploying the highest density sensor network dedicated to monitor seismic activity in Portugal. The network will be constituted by about 60 sensors in the region of Évora (300 sensors are planned in total). It will monitor strong seismic activity in real-time, allowing the generation of live shake maps. Importantly, the network is expected to: Enhance the knowledge on the characterisation of the seismic activity in the region through high-resolution mapping of clusters and faults; 2) Create an organised database populated with live data from the high-density seismic network; 3) Rapid assess ground shaking movements (e.g., earthquake); 4) Improve geohazard assessments.
