1. Initiation Stage
Mesenchymal cells act on and influence ectodermal tissue to initiate odontogenesis. Stomodeum lined by ectoderm. Oral epithelium and basement membrane all present.

2. Bud Stage
Dental laminal undergoes extensive proliferation. Produces buds or oval masses that penetrate the ectomesenchyme. Each arch has 10 buds present (total 20). Buds develop into individual tooth germs.

3. Cap Stage
Tooth bud forms into a cap shape attached to the dental lamina. Differentiation and morphogenesis occur. Outside there is enamel organ and inside dental papilla.

4. Bell Stage
Continuation and ongoing process of proliferation, differentiation and morphogenesis. Cap shape now assumes bell shape.

5. Apposition Stage
Secretory stage- enamel, dentine and cementum are secreted in successive layers. Amelogenesis occurs.

6. Maturation Stage
Occurs when the matrices of the hard-dental tissue types fully mineralize.
