Computer Science professor David Zeichick is an expert when it comes to online security, and is quick to tout its importance.

David Zeichick, "Everyone uses technology on a daily basis with your smart phone in your pocket, to everyone who in a modern job works on a computer day to day. So it's really important to understand the type of attacks that are out there, and then more importantly, how to defend against those attacks."

Zeichick is one of three new tenure track professors in the College of ECC this fall. However, he isn't new to Chico State. He earned his masters here, has worked as a staff member in the information security office, and has been a lecturer in Computer Science for the past seven years. During that time he's even created a student club.

Zeichick, "The name of the club, security club, is called usr0, which is a play on getting root, which is the most access you can get to a system. The last year we had a good strong attendance of like 30 to 40 members every week."

Most notably, students from the club have competed in the NCL, or National Cyber League, and last fall a team of his students won the national championship, and one of them, Victor Torres, would also go on to capture the individual title, beating out nearly 5,000 competitors from around the country. While Zeichick is incredibly proud of the achievement, he's quick to deflect any credit.

Zeichick, "Giving them some of the basic tools is definitely important, but their interest and all the dozens, or hundreds of hours they put into it was all on them."

Currently Zeichick is working on his PhD in Information Assurance, and should be finishing up his dissertation work by the end of next summer. In the meantime though, he's happy with his new position, and thoroughly enjoys the fact that he gets to keep on working with students.

Zeichick, "It's great to be able to watch students learn, and get those "aha" moments, and then kind of the bigger achievements of doing well in these competitions, where they're showing a passion for the subject."
