HI. I'm Avi Goldman and this is a documentation of my final project for my BA in New Media at SUNY Purchase.

New Ancient is an installation sculpture that utilizes cutting edge fungi based material and physical and digital computational technology to explore a refusal of the presupposed duality between Nature and Technology. In this dynamic sculpture, the presupposed two are unified in vision as a superimposed one.
The sculptural elements are made of mycelium, the Fungi’s underground networking system. Recent scientific discovery has given humans insight into Fungi’s misunderstood and concealed importance. It has been revealed that mycelium is the key lifeform that has created the thriving soils, and sustains, conducts the ecological cycles of life in and on the land of Earth. By providing a living network of electro-chemical communication, the mycelium has surrected life to otherwise a planet of inert rock.
For this artistic exploration, the fibers of this network of natural intelligence have been grown to envelope and compose programmed technological elements into a structural and conceptual composite
system. The installation expresses an
ongoing synthesis that explores Nature by
artificial means, Technology by natural
models, and emerging and primordial relationships trans fungi-human. The sculpture offers a platform for education on Fungi’s key role in our environment. In addition, it is a call to challenge our conceptual views, a metaphysical investigation of life, delving the miraculous implications of intelligence, from symbiosis to the circuit board. The piece investigates the primordial processes that is Nature, the journey of eons now in context of our technological present, and reaches for a future where disharmonious dualities are investigated and harmonious symbioses merge and emerge into unity.
