Inside the heart of every Molekule air purifier is a unique process called PECO, or Photo Electrochemical Oxidation. Developed over two decades by research scientists, PECO is an innovative technology that utilizes free radicals – the same radicals used to destroy cancer cells – to break down pollutants at a molecular level, including VOCs, smoke particles, bacteria, mold, viruses, and allergens. By using nanotechnology, PECO is able to destroy pollutants 1000 times smaller than what the traditional HEPA standard measures for.
Molekule PECO-Filters are high-efficiency filters that feature a patented, proprietary catalytic media. As UV-A light photons strike the nanocatalyst, hydroxyl radicals are created on the surface of the filter from water vapor. These are highly unstable molecules that only exist for a moment before rebalancing with the air. As pollutants pass over the filter, the hydroxyl radicals react and break them apart into natural, harmless elements like water and carbon dioxide. HEPA is designed to collect pollutants. PECO captures and destroys them.
