INTRODUCTION

I make computer graphics pictures and animations as a hobby. My current project is a short film which requires learning many aspects of computer graphics, Blender, and film making.

This video is a demo of my efforts to learn character animation and simulations. My progress so far, problems encountered, and the resources used are covered below.

HAIR and WATER

I used Blender 2.82’s particle hair. I made a vertex group for part of her head to be the scalp. The hair particles grow from that group and have the material or color of that group. I used the hair settings to give a slight wave and the particle edit functions for grooming. I read that a human has 80K to 110K hairs. This character has 80K.

I found a setting that stopped the hair from grouping in sheets but now I don’t know where that is. It makes a nice style though.

The water uses the new flip fluids simulation included in Blender. I have seen great things done in videos with this but I had trouble achieving results like that. The water is not transparent to better display the fluid behavior.

LESSONS LEARNED

It is not difficult to make particle hair. This video is rendered with eevee. I could not get the hair to appear in a cycles photo realistic render and could not determine why.

The flip fluid simulation is very slow. Baking the data for the 8 seconds of animation took 8.66 hours on my FX 8320. The results are not better than the old simulation. My lack of knowledge is the cause of some problems but the documentation and tutorials are lacking at this time. I will wait for better information about this sim before using it.
