*** TRANSCRIPT ***
To teach somebody a completely new technical concept requires a
couple of steps. First of all, you have to understand your audience. The way
I explain a concept to my little brother is going to be different than they
way I would explain the same concept to Bill Gates. The efficacy of your
explanation heavily relies on this. If I treat Mr. Gates like he is 6 years
old, he will become bored and will not learn anything from my oversimplified
explanation. On the other hand, if I treat my little brother like he is the
founder of Microsoft, he won't follow a single thing I say. Next is to
answer the following questions in this order. What, Why, How, and When. The
audience has to know WHAT you are talking about, WHY it is important for
them to know, HOW to implement that technology, and WHEN it should or should
not be used. For example, let's say I am explaining to someone how to use
Django. The first thing I would do is explain what a web framework is, and
specific information to Django so that they can understand why it works
the way it does. This would look like explaining the MVC design pattern and
the similarities between MVC and Django's MTV design pattern.
Then I have to explain why Django is such a versatile framework, this might
look like talking about how Django facilitates development by giving users
many built in security and authentication methods. After why is answered,
I move onto how. I do this by giving the audience interactive examples, or
leading them through a sample Django project. Finally, I have to explain
when to use Django. Yes Django is great, but it is not a one size fits all
framework. There are use cases for everything, and after learning a new
concept it is just as important to know those use cases as it is to know
how to implement it. After this is done, I would clear up any confusion by
taking any questions my audience would have, ensuring they walk away with a
new found appreciation and understanding for the explained concept.
