Transcript:

Hello – it’s me again. For those who I haven’t met yet, my name is Tara McCrackin and I am proud to serve as the president of Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University.

I want to thank everyone that participated in the KCAD Student Fall 2020 Planning survey. Over 150 new and current students participated representing a sampling of about 25% of the student population. Pretty impressive for a June student survey – thanks to those that shared their opinions. The information collected has been very informative allowing us to better understand how students are feeling about the upcoming fall semester as well as identify areas where more support may be needed.

Overall, the survey responses indicate that students feel ready to return to campus with face-to-face instruction. Most students also indicated that they are prepared to wear a face covering when social distancing is not possible on campus and that they are willing to follow sanitization procedures in and out of the classroom.

The survey responses also demonstrate that not all KCAD students are ready to return to campus for face-to-face instruction. And of those who indicated they are ready to return many may still have concerns about the possibility of community spread and others not following health and safety guidelines effectively.

This fall we will all need to be flexible and adaptable, but more importantly, we will need to practice empathy and understanding toward one another. This pandemic is affecting us all - students, faculty, and staff in varied ways. There is not a one size fits all solution. I have confidence that we will continue to come together to ensure our campus is a healthy, supportive, and safe learning community.

This summer has provided us valuable time to prepare and be strategic about our ongoing response to the impact of COVID-19. I am happy to share that we are hopeful that we will be able to open KCAD’s campus buildings in the fall and we are actively preparing to do so.

With that being said I must also share that campus will need to look and function differently for this to be possible. Many classes will transition to online or hybrid instruction to allow place-based learning to continue on campus with socially distant face-to-face instruction. Faculty and staff are spending this summer engaged in learning and developing high-quality online tools and virtual opportunities.

Ferris including KCAD has also made the decision that all classes will transition to fully online with limited access to campus resources and labs following the Thanksgiving holiday break. This was not an easy decision, but it was made to limit the risk for community members to be exposed to or spread COVID-19.

Specific information regarding what classes will transition to online or hybrid formats will be communicated to students in the coming weeks along with more information about what you can expect as we return to campus this fall.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you soon!
