MELT is a collection of sculptural furniture, created solely with small junk plastic and metal items, finished with washi paper and linen fabric, applied with a mixture of natural glue. It's an exploration of giving plastic and metal trash new life, through the unexpected combination of traditional and experimental techniques.
The idea of MELT was born in Vietnam, during our travels to the South of the country, where beautiful beaches are only cleaned up in the resort areas, but the rest of the shoreline is filled with trash. In this submission, we present a prototype of a side table from the collection that will consist of several one-of-a-kind sculptural furniture pieces.
For the side table presented in this submission, we have collected over 200 plastic objects (bottles, containers, canisters, lighters, etc), which were then melted and sculpted around the metal junk structure (wires, various details) to create the base of the piece. Then, the top layer of the piece was created with our interpretation of the traditional Japanese ikkanbari technique, using the torn pieces of rice paper artworks and linen fabric, glued to the structure with a mixture of gum arabic and PVA.
As a top finish coat, a clear lacquer is used to add sturdiness and protection to the piece.
