I tried to describe Density Functional Theory to Hosomi. Hosomi is a visiting Japanese undergraduate student with a background in computer science. He has little experience in chemistry and no experience in quantum chemistry. DFT is a technique used to solve for the electronic density of molecular systems. From the electronic density, we can compute all sorts of interesting properties. The reason DFT is so popular is that it computes the properties of the molecules without having to actually compute the full many-body electronic wavefunction. The full electronic wavefunction is a multi-dimensional function of 3N coordinates. On the other hand, the electronic density is only dependent on the 3 spatial coordinates. DFT represents the energy as a functional of the density and in turn, makes solving the problem a bit more feasible.
