Marc Bauer
The Sea, 2019 (Animated film, b/w, 60 sec, no sound)

Marc Bauer is known for his narrative series of drawings emerging from his deep interest in the cultural and political developments of society. Composed primarily of works on paper, printed close-ups featuring earlier works and large site-specific murals, his installations often explore specific historical subjects, ranging from personal family-related experiences to collective social and political heritage.

“The Sea”, 2019 is an animation that belongs to Bauer‘s extensive body of work “Mal Etre / Performance”, first exhibited at the Drawing Room in London in 2019. In addition to the film, the series comprises of a wall drawing and several drawings on paper, which tell the story of people at sea throughout history. Inspired by motifs from ancient Greece to images from contemporary news, such as the Aquarius, which rescued migrants in the Mediterranean Sea in 2018, Bauer embarks on an investigation on people in (forced) transit or shipwreck across seas today and in the distant past.

While the drawings, through a trans-historical approach, address questions of empathy and humanity posed by the migrant crisis, the animation creates a parallel space of imagination, bestowing the viewer an additional layer of meaning. It focuses on the actual body experience of the sea, its strong waves and the preception of the changing horizon, while the sea is moving. It concentrates different memories and impressions of the sea, of being on a boat in the open sea, combined with the sound of water (external to the video), heartbeats and breathing. During the production process the artist was also interested in the technique: the several images used for the animation were all painted with black oil on plexiglas. The texture and fluidity of the oil painting and the transparency of the pictorial medium appeared to form an analogy to the sea water.
