Hi, I’m Makenzie. Before this I was on weekends, I was a waitress… and obviously that ended when Coronavirus started. So, I got this position here and I’ve recently just handed my notice in because I’ve decided I’d like to stay here instead.

I’ve been here maybe a month and the experience I’ve got has been amazing. A lot more than usual teenager, maybe. It’s definitely expanded… even my views on the whole care system. There’s not been a day that’s gone by where I’ve felt ‘Oh no, what have I got to do’ because literally just ask the question and I’ve got the help straightaway.

I mean some days are more challenging than others. They are all aged between 19 and 20 and they are just what you’d expect of typical, typical young men, I guess… Creative, they’re confident, they’re very happy. They are all really fantastic to be working with and spending time with. Honestly, it differs from every day, we’ll do activities… baking, going out and playing maybe rugby or football for the hour of freedom we’ve got. Oh, we have actually been building a sensory garden, so we’ve been doing lots of painting, gardening, drilling, jet- washing, doing absolutely everything.
Now that I’m becoming a part time permanently, I am now starting working to do personal care as well, which is obviously going to be amazing for my experience and helping with the staff of course.

I am doing my e-learning. I can’t do any actual training at the moment due to Coronavirus but I’m hoping that afterwards I will be able to participate in some of that.

I absolutely love it. I think the communication, teamwork, all the part of it is amazing. It’s not even just coming in to help it’s the experience itself is fantastic and it’s something I feel that everybody should have the opportunity to do. If you’ve got the drive for it, you should be doing it.
