This was the last thing that I had not yet figured out how to fix. Starting in Season 4, when the wormhole opens, the image becomes replete with interlacing artifacts all the way through the fade out, and there is no footage interpretation or deinterlacing technique that was able to faithfully fix it without reducing the quality of the image. Enter Topaz VEAI's new model Dione, specifically designed to work with SD interlaced footage. Dione TD specifically was used for this shot because the other models double the frame rate which I did not want. I used it at 100% to just fix the interlacing, and it worked pretty well. There was one issue where the the very bottoms of the names (Rick Berman & Michael Pillar) were flickering, so I layered the processed version on top of the original and just masked out the names, revealing the original non-flickery footage underneath. Then I ran this result through both Artemis MQ and Gaia HQ. Artemis does better and sharpening and restoring details, but tends to smooth out clouds of very fine particles like we see in the wormhole. Gaia doesn't restore as much detail but does an excellent job with particle clouds. Layering the Artemis version with the Lighten opacity blending mode on top of the Gaia version gives you the benefits of both. The final result satisfies my quest to finally defeat this issue present in every episode Season 4 onward.
