Students of the Luxton Park Teen Program participated in a 9-week photography course using disposable cameras. Using the cameras between course sessions, students took photographs in the wider community to tell stories about themselves and where they lived. Storytelling is vital to a healthy, engaged, and connected community as well as related individuals. Photography is a way for people to learn about and share small parts of their lives. The participants were teen and pre-teen students.

This class was taught by photographer and community artist Kyra Nygard. This project was a collaboration between Kyra, Jerome Stein of the Learning Dreams program at the University of Minnesota, the Prospect Park Association, Ismail Said, and Steve Zimmer from the Minneapolis Park Board and East Side Neighborhood Services. This class would not be possible without all of these people coming together to make this happen.

Students were given three disposable cameras throughout the photography course and guided to photograph many subjects, including landscapes, portraits, and still-lives, to document their lives and experiences. In the last few weeks the students collaborated to create this book of their collective photographs.
