Major emphasis of this lecture is on Lower Cervical Spine Injury. This lecture explains subaxial cervical spine injuries, SLIC scoring system, burst and teardrop fractures along with distractive flexion mechanism, bilateral and unilateral facet joint dislocations. Learning value of this V-learning™ lecture is also increased by explaining hyperextension injury, clay-shoveller’s fracture, and cervical disc herniation.Burst and Teardrop Fractures

Among the lower cervical spine, the area of subaxial cervical spine injuries ranges from C3 to C7. Compressive flexion, distractive flexion, and lateral flexion injuries are grouped into subaxial cervical spine injuries. For the assessment of severity of injury, three main characteristics are the base of SLIC scoring system which are discussed extensively in the lecture. Axial compression and flexion of cervical spine leads to the burst and ‘teardrop’ fractures. In addition to this, comments are given on flexion injuries and wedge compression fracture.

FLEXION-DISTRACTION INJURY
In distractive flexion mechanism, progressive instability is seen because of the movement of structures from posterior to anterior. After that, posterior ligament injury is discussed. Subsequently, bilateral facet joint dislocations come under consideration along with unilateral facet dislocations (UFDs). Then, the procedure of closed cervical reduction is pursued where skull traction is used. Lastly, light is shed on surgical open reduction and surgical stabilization.

HYPEREXTENSION AND OTHER INJURIES
Hyperextension injury is more common in cervical spondylosis. In such injuries, if cord gets pinched then a condition arises known as acute central cord syndrome. Similarly, avulsion injury of the spinous process is discussed known as clay-shoveller’s fracture. Moreover, characteristics of cervical disc herniation are elaborated. Information about neurapraxia of cervical cord is reported at the end of this section.
