People (even well-informed ones!) say the strangest things about teaching young children to sing.
Here are three myths I heard recently and my reaction to them:
1. When a young child takes one on one singing lessons, they will learn bad habits. [People who say this assume that voice teachers have the same expectations of young instruments as they do of adult-sized instruments and that voice teachers don't adjust their teaching to serve the specific parameters of the young voice.]
2. When a young child takes one on one singing lessons, they will blow their voices out singing Annie. [People who buy in to this myth assume that voice teachers have no access to current repertoire that is written for the child voice AND that voice teachers don't understand that musicals are mic'ed nowadays so no one needs to injure themselves through oversinging (even if they sometimes do. which: ALL SINGERS RUN THE RISK OF OVER SINGING; this is not an issue that is ENDEMIC to the child voice.))
3. One on one voice lessons with young children should be about teaching musicianship skills and not about teaching technique. [Ugh. First of all: great teachers often TEACH BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. Second: Folks who believe this myth somehow believe that voice teachers can't adjust their teaching to the specific coordination possibilities of the young singer and are somehow teaching a young singer exactly the same things and in the same way that they are teaching an adult singer (see point 1).]
