New technology is inundating us--witness the iPhone which did not exist 15 years ago and now dominates our lives. Electric lighting is improving at a mile a minute. From the incandescent lamp, largely unchanged since Edison, to fluorescent lamps to compact fluorescent lamps and now to LED's, improvements have been rapid and revolutionary. LED's are now seven times more efficient than incandescents (think 10 mpg vs. 70 mpg.)
Incandescents were hot enough to set fires while LED's are barely warm. They come in any color and can be used for virtually any application.
