Here's the Lego elevator in action. What is noteworthy is that the elevator is using a distance sensor to find each floor. The two building have floors of different heights, and each floor has a marker. The code detects leaving a floor, and then arriving at a new floor. It then makes a small adjustment for the thickness of the floor marker. Technically, this could work for any number of floors, if the elevator were tall enough.
