Beginning from a place of introspection and through a deep exploration of my sense of self, the project ‘Knock Knock’ investigates my deep impulse to play dress up in front of the camera. Through creating multiple characters, and by masking my own physical identity, I realised how fragile my sense of self was. In turn, using these characters as a mode to conceptualise my anxieties surrounding my identity. These characters became extensions of my own ego. I began to question my surroundings, the music that I listened to, the movies that I watched and those that I spent time with. Drawing from Ichiro Kishimi’s idea that “it is only in social contexts that a person becomes an individual”.1 I ask myself, “Is there no ‘self’ without other individuals”?
Utilising the surrealist technique of the exquisite corpse to visualise the fragmented nature of the psyche, which I express in my visual world of rich shades of red, deep blacks and evocative imagery. I invite the reader to engage with the work, not just from beginning to end, but back and forth between pages creating an interactive experience as new and strange characters are generated through endless combinations of pages.
It is not my intention to present these ideas through a pessimistic viewpoint, but by injecting humour and a sense of the absurd through the playful and childlike construction of the book. By engaging the reader to invent their own characters I allow thoughts of the influence that our interpersonal relationships have over us and reflect on the mask of ourselves that we create when facing the world.
