The III Form science classes have been learning about energy. This week they were exploring the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. The students engaged in a lab called "Rockin Race Cars." The purpose of this lab was to allow the students to think like an engineer. They had to build a ramp with tracks and experiment with different heights to make their cars go as far as possible.
Through trial and error, the students discovered that the car had the most potential energy when it was at the top and then the energy was converted into kinetic energy as it went down the tracks. The students learned that if they wanted the car to go further they needed to increase the ramp's height because the higher the ramp, the more potential energy it has, and therefore, it has more kinetic energy to go farther along the track.
All this inquiry has led the students to another question to solve: Will all rolling objects accelerate down the ramp at the same rate, regardless of their mass?
