Class, a play by Jaymes Jorsling. 1964. By day, Way Tonniver teaches classical theory, uptown. By night, he hosts epic jam sessions in his downtown loft. His star pupil, Trevor Headley, is trapped between classical music, jazz, and being Black, in Civil Rights Era America. Teacher/Student. Black/White. Jazz/Classical. Love/Loyalty. These factions engage in a Juilliard classroom; a school that was founded in 1905, yet failed to issue its first jazz-based degree until 2004. Why did it take 99 years for jazz to be recognized as a legitimate art form at the world's leading musical institution? And, more importantly, who's teaching and who's learning, when the final grade is survival?
