Janet Wood Acceptance Speech, receiving the Sierra Club Kern-Kaweah Chapter Long Trail Award, reognizing long-term contributions as a volunteer to our chapter. Here is her acceptance speech when she received the award at the Chapter Annual Banquet on 31 March 2019. What do badgers and the Sierra Club have in common?

This short speech was made after the following introduction about Janet's service to the chapter, read by Chapter Secretary Ara Marderosian, seen at right in this video:

The Long Trail Award

In 1984, the Kern-Kaweah Chapter of the Sierra Club resolved to honor members who had given service to the Chapter over a long period of time. A hiking staff with a small plaque was chosen as the symbol of appreciation.

Our Chapter is grateful for the dedication and craftsmanship of our hiking staff artisans. The first Chapter carver was Jud Flemming, who long ago climbed Gerry Schumacher’s pecan tree and removed several “just right” branches for the Long Trail staff. In recent years, our hiking sticks have been artfully shaped by Elden Kordes, who lives in Bear Valley Springs, in Tehachapi.

The hiking staffs are handsomely carved by hand and polished with a satin finish. At the top of the staff the artist carves an image that is special to our honoree.

I am pleased to announce the Long Trail Award for 2018 is presented to...

Janet Wood. Janet, would you please come up.

Janet Wood became a member of the Sierra Club in 1978. She has been a member of the Sierra Club for an incredible 41 years. Janet began her career at that time in the Sierra Club in Washington State's Cascade Chapter. She served on the Chapter's first Political Action Committee and its local Tatoosh Group, where she served on the Wilderness Committee. She had various roles on the ExCom, including Treasurer. She and her husband Harold had a Sierra Club wedding in 1979. After they moved to Visalia to join the Mineral King Group of the Kern-Kaweah Chapter in 1985, she became Secretary and later Treasurer. And she has been Treasurer off and on ever since then and is currently the Treasurer. As a consistently re-elected Mineral King Group ExCom member beginning in 1989, she continued to serve the Group in multiple capacities. She first served as Mineral King Group Chair from March 2008 through January 25, 2012. In January 2017 she was re-elected as Chair of the Group once again, and remains the chair today. She was a member of the Kern Kaweah Chapter ExCom, serving as Treasurer of the Chapter itself from 2004 to 2007. And she has been very active in the Sequoia Task Force.

As a volunteer for NASA/JPL, she has a special interest in global climate change issues, and has presented several slide presentations about ways to address climate change. Also since December 2008, Janet has served as a member of the Sierra Club John Muir Education Team. In that capacity she drafted the Science Lesson Plans for the John Muir Study Guide on the Club's national website. These lesson plans are a resource for teachers focused on environmental issues.

Janet, thank you on behalf of the Kern-Kaweah Chapter of the Sierra Club for your splendid years of service. May your walking stick ease your journey through many more years to come.

Janet, you have selected the (badger, tiger) to be the theme of the carving on your walking stick. Would you like to say a few words?
