Hello there!
My name is Vinicius Sueiro and I believe design is a powerful tool for driving change, but we have to make sure we’re solving more problems than we are creating.
Companies are using the human-centered design approach combined with agile methods to innovate. And while they might be solving real needs, they might also be creating larger problems in the long run.
This is partially due to the “fail fast” mindset, that inhibits us from thinking critically about the consequences of our products. These unintended results can be especially harmful when we’re dealing with biotechnology, extended reality or artificial intelligence, for example.
In order to bring more responsibility into my process, I like to go from the human-centered to a humanity-centered design approach. By imagining possible futures that we’d like to live in, we can work backwards – and design with this long term goal in mind.
Since we want a future where algorithms are fair, we can design a visual narrative that raises awareness about a racially biased dataset being fed into an app used by millions.
Since we’d like to live in a world free of plastic, we can design a toy that is not only made from reused material, but that is also used for educating children on the life cycle of products and sustainability.
Since we want every boy and girl living in a foster home to find a family, regardless of their age, gender or race, we can design a data visualization that shows which kids are left behind in the adoption process.
