SYNOPSIS
As the mind enters an unconscious state, its exploration and understanding of ideas shifts, constantly interpreting concepts in different ways. Different states of mind, whether emotional or intellectual, recognise the world around it in many ways, and try to make sense of personal goals and anxieties. The stream of unconscious thinking moves rapidly, leaving behind the rules of reality, to explore ideas in different ways. Doors don’t lead where we expect them to lead. Voices don’t use words, but their meanings are still understood. Objects do not behave the way we expect them too, but are still recognisable. Naturally, when the conscious mind recognises this pattern, the flow is disrupted, and the brain scrambles to remember its place, which throws the memory and subconscious into havoc, jolting itself out of its involuntary state.
Uncertain perspectives on goals and anxieties are on full display, the mind approaching their analysis through visual confrontation and debate. Perceptions of the self are unrefined and constantly changing, and the influence this has on the mind’s understanding and beliefs can be fracturing, often leading to disarray and confusion.
The film takes influence from Maya Deren’s “Meshes of the Afternoon” (1943), in its presentation of the way the unconscious can fragment elements of memory - recognition of singular objects often formed through multiple perspectives, physical spaces not as clear and consistent as they are in reality. Peter Tscherkassky’s layering technique also had a role in influencing this film, creating multiple viewpoints of a single situation, and creating a surreal tone.
