We will be giving an overview of the ethics and principles of Permaculture, which provide a robust framework to make our designs have greater resilience and regenerative capabilities. Permaculture as defined by R. Buckminster Fuller is “the effective application of the principles of science to the conscious design of our total environment in order to help make the Earth’s finite resources meet the needs of all humanity without disrupting the ecological processes of the planet.” Working with Nature, instead of against it, is a guiding principle. It is a system that can be applied to any scale project, so it is a very accessible practice for people of all abilities and backgrounds. Permaculture builds on synergistic qualities, when one starts leveraging nature’s solutions in creative ways, remarkable results can occur. We will draw examples from permaculture practices from across the globe and the local Ohio scene to show how productive landscapes and ecological restoration can work together to heal both natural and cultural landscapes.
