Despite its important role in public health, informatics is widely misunderstood in its field. Informatics is not computer science, but the application of information science, where data is turned into useable information, then manageable knowledge. When applied to public health, informatics improves data delivery and assists data driven decision making with the end goal of delivering better population health outcomes. As a research intern with the CDC’s Office of Informatics, that means managing research studies and results from outside offices. The complexity of the field lies in what information is, what is meaningful about it, and how to use it to inform decisions in various ways including…determining what type and how much data needs to be collected and the process for capturing it; the interpretation and communication of research results; then organizing and processing data and using available technology to store and manage information. There is a large social science component to the information collection and management process, as well. We account for data collected, from patients or community members, and for policymakers or clinicians who use that information. The collaborative nature of the field supports and improves public health topics that rely on this process. It will only continue to grow, inform, and advance the world of healthcare in a positive way.
