'in Balance', Smart sculpture by FUTURETRO.co.uk
67 cm x 104 cm x 24cm
Pine, Eco-board, steel, Smart control system, colour changing LED light source.
in Balance was created as a play on the relationship between simplicity and complexity and the equilibrium point at where they meet. It comprises a collection of twenty-one separate arrangements of wooden blocks, each arrangement is made up of six identically sized pieces of pine. By creating these arrangements of blocks and then rotating and mirroring them, a simple, yet seemingly complex pattern is formed, which isn’t necessarily immediately obvious to the viewer. The aim was, whilst creating a feeling of visual balance, to urge the viewer to reach deeper than that which initially befalls the eyes. Encouraging one’s vision to move, explore and settle, inducing a stimulating, yet calming observational experience.
The sculpture is inspired by the balance of the ‘transactional’ relationship that exists between all entities in nature; an unspoken harmony that occurs, that isn’t always immediately obvious to the observer. Another concept that has been represented in the piece, through its repetition of blocky shapes, is the growth of humankind and the resultant evolution of the architecture of modern cities. Perhaps a playful representation of a city of the future, built entirely from natural, sustainable materials, in balance with everything?
in Balance is a wall-mounted sculpture and has an internal Smart control system, connected to state-of-the-art LEDs that are concealed within the piece. This enables interaction with the sculpture via Smart technology and allows the selection of colours, programming of sequences and an almost infinite variety of lighting effects. The piece can be integrated into any Smart home system and can also access the microphone in any smartphone or handheld device, transforming the sound that is sensed into a synchronised audio-visual display.
Shown in colour mixing mode. Song is ‘Xtal (Piano Version)’, by Fredrik Lundberg, originally by Aphex Twin.
