Most of the world’s electricity depends on one invention: the steam turbine. But how much do you know about its history? The first steam turbine appeared in the 1st century AD when ancient Greek inventor Hero of Alexandria used steam to spin a hollow metal sphere called an aeolipile. Fast forward to 18th century Britain and engineers like Thomas Newcomen and James Watt started making steam useful for industry through their engine designs. Everything changed in late 19th century when Charles Algernon Parsons developed a steam-powered turbine that could drive a generator and generate electricity. Since Parsons’ day, turbines have got bigger and more efficient. Drax’s six turbines are able to generate more than 600MW each. But at their core they’re almost the same as those very first turbines.
