Joseph K. Heaton had just scratched an Extreme Millions ticket from the Virginia Lottery as he walked up to the store clerk.

“A winner?” the clerk asked. Mr. Heaton just smiled.

So the clerk tried to guess the amount of the prize. He suggested a few numbers, but the Haymarket man just kept replying, “Higher… higher.”

Turns out, he’d won the game’s $10 million top prize!

“I couldn’t believe it,” Mr. Heaton later said. “My head has been spinning ever since.”

On February 14, he returned to the store, Sudley Shell at 7025 Sudley Road in Manassas, to receive his prize from Virginia Lottery officials. He had a choice of taking the full $10 million over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $6,570,302 before taxes. He chose the cash option. The store receives a $50,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Extreme Millions features prizes ranging from $30 to $10 million, including a $1 million second prize. The $10 million prize is the largest prize offered in any Virginia Lottery Scratcher game. This is the third top prize claimed in this game, which means one more $10 million prize remains unclaimed. The odds of winning that top prize are 1 in 2,937,600.

The Virginia Lottery is good fun for a great cause. The winning ticket was bought in Prince William County, which received more than $39.7 million in Lottery funds for K-12 public education last fiscal year. For more information and a complete list of Lottery funds distributed to Virginia school districts, visit the Virginia Lottery’s Giving Back page.

The Virginia Lottery generates more than $1.7 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of Lottery products, the Lottery generated a record $650 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2019. An additional $6.5 million in unclaimed prizes was deposited in the Virginia Literary Fund in FY19, which provides low-interest loans to localities for public school construction, renovations and technology upgrades.
