Despite those who imagine that Hawaiʻi educators require outside help for them to succeed, the reality is that some of the most innovative and exciting education—even on a national scale--is taking place in Hawaiʻi at Hawaiian-focused charter schools (HFCS). Unlike charters on the continent, which are often follow a business model rather than one focusing on students, HFCS are founded by communities to address the needs of students and their home communities.

HFCS start with the premise that Hawaiian land-, language-, and culture-based education offers a rooted and vibrant foundation for students of all ethnicities. Students connect to land, language, and traditional practice to learn science, math, language arts, etc.

Over time we have seen these students grow and have witnessed the results of this kind of education—young adults who care deeply about the well-being of their culture and communities and who are willing and able to step up and support what their culture and communities values.

In the past, the challenge has been that this type of education is so different from traditional Western education that normal modes of assessment do not adequately measure successes of HFCS students and schools. That is all changing now, with Culturally Relevant Assessment approaches and tools that are being adopted by Hawaiʻi charter schools and that are even garnering national attention.
