TRANSCRIPT:

Narrator: At Black & Veatch we put STEM education at the center of our philanthropic efforts. Our goal is to spark a passion for science, technology, engineering and math in the next generation of innovators. So when we decided to build a Rube Goldberg machine for our holiday video, bringing in some STEM students for a unique hands-on learning experience was a no-brainer.

George White | Civil Engineer: A Rube Goldberg device is a device that kids can wrap their minds around and think through the problems to get to a solution that works.

Shalin Shah | Electrical Engineer: We say “STEM” (science, technology, engineering and math) there’s all those facets or aspects being touched by this kind of activity makes a great option for them to learn out of.

Irasma Becerra | STEM Student: At the beginning when I saw the sketch, I was like: “How can they bring this up to real life and real model?” But now that I see it in person, the whole process it went through, I think it’s pretty amazing and I’m really thankful they gave us the opportunity to come and see it in real life.

Merve Cankaya | Electrical Engineer: This is the basis of engineering. They know what the end result is, then they think about “How do I get there?” So they think about how to break it down to processes and then how those processes would work in themselves.

Zeus Flores | STEM Student: For myself, I like to learn by hands-on, so I like to build, unbuild, see what I did wrong. It’s pretty cool, pretty fun.

Kylie Brockman | STEM Student: People who do think STEM is boring; something like this I think would change their mind.

George White | Civil Engineer: I think the kids having this experience today will spark them to go home and try to tinker around with stuff and hopefully it has lit a fire under them that they found this interesting and they feel like they can do it.

Narrator: In and out of the classroom Black & Veatch is committed to unique partnerships that stress the importance of STEM education’s young people. It’s another way Black & Veatch is Building a World of Difference®.
