GREEN HIGH SCHOOL
PROJECT FOR A VERTICAL HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS WITH ASSOCIATED COMMUNITY SPORTS FACILITIES
The subject site is located at Gunyama Park, Zetland. Is an urban setting in a rapidly densifying area of Sydney, typical of inner urban areas being converted from former commercial and industrial areas in many large cities around Australia.
The proposed design, “Green High School”, is seen as an opportunity to re-create an organic natural learning ecosystem, a community of living and non-living organisms, where each component interacts together as a unit through biological, physical and chemical processes.
The components enabling the interactions that make up the natural learning ecosystems include soil, plants, sunlight, air, water, and living organisms. This interaction translates in a new way of learning for the students and a new way of living for the community.
“Green High School”, comprise of a new 14 levels Vertical High School, basement carpark and associated community sports facilities located at ground & lower ground floor which will be shared with the school. The school will follow the national curriculum for secondary stage from years 7 to 12 (typically 13 years to 18 years old) and will accommodate up to seven classes in each year (total 42 classes) with maximum class sizes set to 30 pupils in years 7-10 and 25 pupils in years 11 and 12. The total proposed enrolment capacity will be up to 1190 pupils. An allowance for 10% expansion is explored in the concept design proposing options for how this could be accommodated is assumed that the expansion will increase the total enrolment capacity by 10% up to 1309 pupils.
The school will offer the opportunity to pupils to expand their learning across academic, cultural and sporting opportunities it will be affiliated with local Green Square precinct, local university and sporting high performance facilities.
The sports which will be a focus for the school on site are athletics, handball, basketball and soccer.
The proposal caters the needs of the school & the community as discussed above and demonstrates flexibility & functionability, maximising the potential of a vertical school format to encourage social learning & interaction. The high school building is designed using a skyscraper approach where vertical circulation elements (lifts+stairs) and amenities are located in the central core leaving the floor plate adaptable to different uses and functions.
Outstanding design & architectural experience for the users is achieved in respect of the functional brief provided by the clients, a balanced variety of covered & uncovered spaces readily accessible by the school & the public is offered on the lower levels together with the multipurpose community games field, game courts, gymnasium, canteen and coffee lounge. On the upper levels are located the core functions of the high school, indoor and outdoor learning units. This separation between formal learning on the upper levels and informal learning / public space on the lower levels will ensure increased security for the school component and enhanced accessibility by the community.
In order to improve the community engagement shared learning programs, on site-food production courses / workshops will be available together with the use of school sports facilities after school hours and on school holidays.
Provision is also made for to additional uses / functions of the public spaces such as:
• Utilization of the game courts area as “Green High School Local Markets” over the weekends in order to improve community engagement and recognition. This is also an opportunity to take advantage of the use of food production on-site with the opportunity of selling the products at the markets
• possibility to book Canteen & Coffee lounge for private events and functions after school hours and on weekends / school holidays
• utilization of the community multipurpose games field for local festivals and shows
Another key element of the project is the Landscape which will transform the existing site from his former industrial use to a new community hub of parks and outdoor activities.
The use of the landscape will be intensive & it will be integrated to different components of the project:
• at ground floor it will form a barrier from the local vehicular noise coming from George Julius Avenue, Zetland Avenue and Joynton Avenue and provide a combination of outdoor spaces and grassed / landscaped areas where the students & community can cater their outdoor activities. It will form also a buffer from the adjoining residential lots on the south boundary.
• at first floor it will be integrated within the roof of the gymnasium creating a combination of green gardens and terraces, provision is also made for food production plots on the first-floor outdoor area readily accessible by both community and students.
