Develops Buoyancy, Balance, Trust, & Enjoyment in the water.

I like floating devices for kids. I like them to have experience bobbing in floating devices, so that they can be independent in the water, without having a person touch them.
And.. I just let him put his face in. I let him have Trial and Error Learning. I want him to know he can be independent in the water. He has to believe that he can swim in order to trust what I want him to do. If he always thinks someone has to hold him in the water, he's going have accepting times when I have to let go of him.
I know we're creating a false sense of security and it's dangerous to do that, if you're not also teaching him to swim, because he might be really attracted to the water and won't even care whether you're in it or not. They'll just want to go to the water, thinking that they're safe. I know we're creating a false sense of security, but they need a certain amount of false security in order to embark on anything that might be challenging, otherwise they'll be too afraid to try it. You have to believe that it's possible to get through it.
The other way we could do it is to force him to learn, and that would be the "Sink or Swim Method". And that is always possible. I've done that and did it for many decades, where you just back float them, and if they fight you, they go under and they figure out "well, I better back float, because when I go under I can't breathe." I don't want to go that route. I want to go the "gentle" route as long as I'm making progress. If I stop making progress being gentle, then I'm going to push, but if I can make progress with this kind of swim lesson today, I'm going to go with it. There are not that many skills for him to learn. So, it's pretty easy to teach him if I have his willingness to learn. If I've connected with him, I can direct him a lot better.

Ok, I'm going to sing "Bye Bye", alright?
Bye, bye, Hudson
Bye, bye, Hudson
Bye, bye, Hudson
I'll see you again next time.

This is a partially deflated swim ring. That's the magic of it. You don't want it to be inflated all the way. You want it to put him as low in the water as possible, so that he's got some natural buoyancy. I love that his feet are on the surface and he's not vertical.
