The Venkat Trust was set up in 2004 in memory of Venkat, a young boy Trust founder Sylvia Holder had met on the beach in Kovalam, Tamil Nadu, years before and whose education she had sponsored.
Venkat was forging a successful career after university when he was tragically killed in a road accident. Sylvia decided to set up the Trust to provide education for all the the children of the very poor fishing village and give them the same opportunity Venkat had had.
16 years on Kovalam is a centre of educational excellence, 90% of its school leavers go on to university or vocational training. Poverty is now a thing of the past.
