In 1969, AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal established the group General Idea in Toronto, Canada, active between the years 1969 and 1994. In 1987, the group would produce several paintings in which the sole motif is the encircled “C” of “Copyright”. This sigil, affixed on millions of backgrounds, becomes the subject of painting here. Its treatment in gold leaf, a craft-like technique, aligns it more closely with a religious icon and expresses, with irony, the critical position taken by General Idea’s with regard to intellectual property and the relationships between art and commerce.
The artists say “for years, our works were created with a commercial rationale, to avoid fetishizing the hand of the artist, the mark of individual genius. Likewise, our name, General Idea, refutes the notion of an author. During the 25 years of our collaboration, we questioned (or played with) the concept of author and copyright in all their forms”.
