Una Nowling is the Fuels Technology Leader for Black & Veatch’s power business. In 2012, Una made her gender transition and helped establish the company’s gender identity and gender expression policy.
“Black & Veatch judged me on my capabilities, on who I was as a person, how I worked with others, how I managed my projects and my technical expertise,” she says. “The rest of it was really inconsequential, as it should be.”

Many people ask me about my name, Una. It means 'truth,' and that's the way I live now. I am a senior engineer, working for the best company in the world, and I am a transgender person. I had all the advantages. I had a company that stood behind me. My family rallied behind me. My friends rallied behind me. That's why I became a public speaker and an activist. I have been invited by other companies to help train on how to integrate and support transgender employees. One of the reasons I'm invited to speak at so many places is because my experience at Black & Veatch is highly unusual. When your company supports you, when your career supports you, and your co-workers support you, you can do anything.
