One of our assignments at Lost Boys school of Visual Effects. It was a frustrating project, because we learned how to do it in Mantra and comp it in Nuke. The renders could take several days on the render farm and I was just learning Nuke, so my results wasn't pleasing. So I re-created the digital asset with Redshift instead, making the renders x10 times faster with colliding geometry and Redshift raindrop instances. The original rain was made with subframe motion blur, something only Mantra supports. To make it work with Redshift, I instead used curves with various pscale size and Polywired them. Bigger and longer, closer to the camera and smaller, more, towards the back. Rendered out with JPG quality 30% to get the same kind of noise as in the reference.
