The process of applying for life insurance has always been cumbersome. The intensive form-filling, paperwork and meetings were tedious for both brokers and customers. In addition, the compliance burden was resulting in advisers leaving the industry entirely. Partner’s Life needed a product which simplified the process for advisers and provided a clear and understanding experience for clients. The result was Evince.
In designing Evince, we were taken with the creation of a dynamic sales tool and design system that reshapes conversations between advisers and their clients. To do this we combined smart technology, data science and a fluid U.I to create a faster, more compelling customer experience, with far less overhead.
Guiding our approach were our design principles: become essential, provide clarity, be empathetic and earn trust and confidence. Applying them to everything we designed, from moodboards to final production, we were able to create a clean, minimal UI. Given the role of Evince was to add clarity to the process of getting life insurance and to function alongside an adviser, it was important it felt factual and reliable, something an overly personable and distracting design wouldn’t have achieved.
The need to devise a way of presenting the volumes of data that goes into life insurance was essential, especially given the context that New Zealand has one of the lowest rates of life insurance in the world. Our first step was to work with a Data Scientist to model the data advisers receive from their clients. We then designed smart defaults to anticipate answers, reduce manual data entry and improve the quality of the values entered.
Next, we needed to help clients understand the value of life insurance. Evince visualises two scenarios: ‘passing away’ and ‘major health issue’. Using client data, the long-term impact of each scenario is projected into the future. This is done using a dynamic graph that visually exposes the financial “gap” between income and expenses over time. As cover is scaled up or down, based on client feedback, the premium is recalculated. This flexibility gives clients a clear understanding of what is and isn’t covered in a revised package, supporting them to make informed decisions.
Evince is designed with the future in mind. Each section of the Evince system is different, resulting in many components, states and page flows. Our challenge was to make each stage still feel like it’s part of the same experience. The design system we’ve created acts as a focused internal guidebook for both designers and developers, especially important for a new platform like Evince.
In real time, Evince has already proven attractive to advisers, with 300+ using the product within just four months. More importantly however, its streamlined data gathering has led to the whole process becoming over 50% faster. Not only does early feedback suggest clients are taking out better levels of insurance, but thanks to Evince, advisers are also achieving more in one appointment than they previously did in two.
