BRAINSTORM:
1. Intro
2. Quote about me talking about the circus and something about time and you said
"that seems really intelligent and there is obviously a lot there, but I have no idea what you mean"
I laughed.
3. Existentialism and the glass castle [Kierkegaard?]
a. What is the castle… inside is the maxim society has chosen… outside is the truth of the purpose of life etc
b. Ive always felt outside of the castle… alone (not saying I know the purpose of life but I have some complex insights… like in class the other day)
- Unable to accept the nonexistence of perfection
- Unable to achieve fulfillment with the current state of my life
- Unable to accept an existence of unconditional love… esp someone else's for me… but I guess also mine for someone else
c. I have advantages though because I have access to the intricacies outside of the castle that no one else can see (another existentialism term… despair)
d. I can also get into the castle… but I have to seek entrance… it is not subconscious second nature
i. Ex --> learning to write for history
ii. Ex --> meeting with Dr. Linthicum (I sought out meeting which is outside castle I would say, but he taught me the reality of inside the castle… ie its okay to not try your hardest… I still wrote a long ass essay on my perfectionism though…)
4. From what I've been taught in school (and I would say our class discussion agrees with this prognosis) poetry was established within the castle to bear heavy meaning -->
- Our class is interesting and unique in that it questions this definition of poetry, however it is outside of the castle in a different way
- The other day in class you said to seek pleasure in irresolution… everyone strives for resolution
- Usually stuff outside the castle is overcomplicated… the New York Poets introduce a new breed of poetry that is less complicated
5. All modes of communication but I suppose written and oral the most… I want to:
1. Learn to understand the thinking of the new york poets
2. Through practice and persistence, make it easier (and almost effortless) for me to find the doors into the castle… so I can show my peers (IN A MANNER THAT THEY CAN UNDERSTAND) the insight I have found outside the walls
