Alphabetical systems are generally a set of ink spots that have been taking
various forms over the centuries. Humanity represents phonograms for over
5,500 years, making spots on supports with a wide range of different tools,
reeds, brushes, pencils, mobile types, digital systems ...

Spots that, with small changes, nuances, slight modulations of their form, can
change their meaning significantly. The shape of the spots means much more
than the phoneme they represent. By this we mean, that on the one hand we
have an abstract basic structure that sustains the interpretation of that particular
phoneme (‘a’, ‘g’, ‘p’), and on the other hand, beyond the semiotic information
that each phoneme can communicate, there are also communicative shapes,
that provide information for themselves (historical, cultural, sensory information,
etc.)

In this project, we will try to explain, in a visual way, the formal changes that
have been appearing throughout history. Also, in a clear and didactic way the
origin of each of the basic subsystems of the current alphabets (uppercase,
lowercase, and cursive forms) based on a historical revision.

But they will also be put in context with the social, cultural, aesthetic, political
or economic changes that have necessarily contributed to the appearance of
new forms. Far beyond the tool, the technique or the rational motive (calligraphy,
typography, digitalization, readability), the idea is to give an overall vision
and try to blur the limits of scientific or technological classifications such as
epigraphy, paleography, calligraphy or typography.

This study will help to develop a pedagogical tool that will communicate in a
clear but rigorous manner the formal evolution of Latin alphabets throughout
history.
