Dr. Shapiro will cover the controversies related to those genetic engineering issues – whether it is natural or desirable to alter ourselves or our offspring. His presentation beginsw ith a look at the scientific history of the subject including the roles of Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer. He will discuss Cells, Genes and DNA and the field of medical genetics. Harold will compare genetic engineering (creating something new) versus genetic therapy( curing something). His concluding focus is on specific issues such as ‘Should we alter genes?’‘Are we okay with genetic testing of embryos? ’‘What about eugenics?’

Dr. Harold T. Shapiro, is President Emeritus and professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University. An economist, his current scholarly interests are in bioethics, science policy, energy and climate issues, and the evolution of postsecondary education. Harold was President of Princeton University from 1988 to 2001, coming there from the University of Michigan where he served on the faculty for 24 years and was president from 1980 to 1988. He continued to teach during his presidencies at both Princeton and Michigan and later until this year.Dr. Shapiro servedas a member and Vice Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology during the administration of President George H. W. Bush. He also served President Bill Clinton’s administration as Chair of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission. He received the National Academy’s Public Welfare Medal in 2012. Anative of Montreal,he has a bachelor's degree from McGill University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in economics.
