For more than 20 years, Barbara Coatney has been a champion for children and seniors in South Mississippi. As a National Service Participant with the Hancock County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), she trains Senior Mentors in Literacy, allowing them to go into the classrooms and assist children falling behind their peers. Barbara also facilitates orientation for new Senior Mentors and has used her grant writing expertise to help the organization continue operating in South Mississippi.
Barbara’s work with RSVP is just one example of her commitment to serving others. She was awarded the Small Business Minority Trainer of the Year for workforce development, has written multiple publications promoting education, and developed presentations to assist minorities and developmentally challenged children. Over the years, Barbara has served on several boards and worked with multiple causes: these causes range from helping to expunge criminal records through the nonprofit, The Men of God, to advocating
for abused and neglected children as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer. She has secured thousands of dollars in grant money to fund community programs, including a United Way summer enrichment program for children in Bay St. Louis and Pearlington and a City of Waveland dog park and firewall for the police department. Barbara also was involved in designing and building a park on property donated by her family for children living in rural Hancock County.
Barbara says her greatest accomplishment is helping an old friend who was struggling with his daily life. He was blind and living alone with health conditions that sent him to the hospital twice a month. Barbara taught him how to use his cane, clean himself, fix breakfast, take his medication and live independently.
Barbara’s abilities and accomplishments on behalf of others are as big as her heart. South Mississippi is blessed to have such a tireless and gracious person willing to help anyone in need.
