This piece is the first in a series exploring Polyvagal Theory, nervous system regulation, and somatic experiencing in healing from trauma. We started this series with the state of dorsal, a place we know well in our own systems.

We have experienced this state of dorsal and activated protective parts many times while creating this image. If we had not known what was happening, we would have quit and not finished it which is the outcome this protective state creates.

This image depicts how it feels to us emotionally, mentally, and physically to be in a state of deep dorsal in our nervous system - alone, collapsed, helpless, hopeless and lost, like you are floating in the abyss with no way out and no one to connect with.

As we have recently learned and experienced, there is actually a way out of this. Learning how to map, navigate, and regulate your nervous system so you can learn to move yourself up the Polyvagal ladder and have flexibility in your system and in your experience of life.
