How we understand, recognize, and communicate about human differences is seldom directly taught in schools. It is given, coerced, and fed to us by families, communities, society, media, laws, and all the informal methods through which people experience the world. Assumptions about disability and human capacity are embedded in every aspect of life. The built environment, art, the design of products, tools, and technology and their DIY adaptations, and how we communicate with each other include cues and messages about who belongs and who matters. This lecture explores some of the ways that disability is represented, disabled peoples’ commentary on it, and the consequences for a global future that is grounded in human rights.
