During sedimentation, solid particles settle in a mixture under the influence of gravity. Due to their different settling rates, the deposited particles are arranged in layers according to their density and size.
A centrifuge is a technical device that separates substances of different densities from one another with high centrifugal force. These centrifugal forces are generated by a rapid, uniform circular movement of the mixture. The laboratory centrifuge used here reaches approx. 3000 G, i.e. 3000 times the acceleration due to gravity. Flottweg centrifuges can reach up to 12000 G.
