Studies show there are more than 500,000 Floridians living with dementia–and nearly 200,000 are living in Lee County. "We want to be prepared for them, to treat them with respect and empathy and have those resources that we can share with them to help them on their journey," said Lee Health Healthy Life Center manager, Carrie Bloemers.

Bloemers says their goal is to have the education and resources patients and their loved ones need at Lee Health. "The Lee County dementia care initiative, also known as DCCI, is an effort through the department of elder affairs of Florida to provide an awareness of dementia, and add assistance to those who are affected by dementia and advocating for care and cure programs," explained Casey Nobile, Lee Memory Care medical social worker.

Lee Health is partnering with DCCI to ensure employees are trained to understand and best communicate with patients with dementia. "It feels like a safe space. It feels like a welcoming environment like they are going to have their needs understood," said Nobile.

A mission that benefits caregivers like Irv Nathanson. "The people here are specifically trained to deal with the behaviors involving dementia and I'm grateful for that."
